Zero Weight Gain Holiday Challenge

Healthy Snacking

popcornDoes it seem like when you go to the grocery store hungry, you end up buying lots of unhealthy food? Or when you arrive starving at a holiday party, you end up eating more than you need? One way to combat this is healthy snacking!

Eating nutritious snacks is a great way to stay on track with your weight goals. You may want to cut down on snacks because it increases how often you eat, but skipping snacks completely may increase calorie intake at mealtime. If done correctly, snacking can actually decrease overall calorie intake for the day, leaving you feeling more energetic and in control.

To keep from getting too hungry and then overeating, try these healthy snacks:

– Carrots and hummus
– A tight fist of almonds or other nuts
– Frozen berries
– Cucumber or raw turnip slices and reduced calorie ranch dip
– Low fat or non-fat yogurt or cottage cheese with fresh fruit and a sprinkle of nuts
– A small handful of dried fruit
– Fresh apple slices and cinnamon yogurt dip
– A few whole wheat pita chips
– Air popped popcorn with a light sprinkle of parmesan cheese
– 3 slices of melba toast and ¼ cup low fat ricotta cheese
– A fresh pear with 1 tablespoon almond butter or peanut butter
– 1 cup of tomato soup or broth-based vegetable soup

Having one to two of these snacks during the day will give you the energy to keep going without unpleasant spikes of hunger. The key is planning your snacks carefully and having them easy to reach when the munchies strike.
