‘Master Gardener Plant Sale’ by Heather McClure, UGA Extension Horticulture Program Assistant

MG Plant SaleThe Rockdale County Master Gardeners are gearing up for their annual plant sale.  Local vendors will be on site to sell goods and connect with the community.  “The goal of the festival organizers is to provide fun, shopping and entertainment for all ages.” according to Heather McClure, UGA Horticultural Specialist.   Featured attractions include a wide variety of plants for sale, gardening seminars, nature activities for children, local artisan shopping along with food and entertainment.

“Our goal is to bring like-minded individuals together, and create a sense of community amongst the gardening population.  There are all kinds of small business owners and artisans that struggle with name recognition in our community, and may sometimes have trouble competing with the larger business.   We want to foster community spirit and help connect people.  And of course, we like to have fun and are raising funds in the process.” says Vivian Cheatham president of the Master Gardener Association.

The money that is raised from the plant salemaster gardener plant sale funds Master Gardener community projects done throughout the year.   Some of the projects include Rockdale County Plant a Row, which is a one acre garden that provides fresh vegetables for the Rockdale Food Bank during the growing season, and the Rockdale Extension Education Garden a teaching and community garden for residents to learn proper horticulture techniques.   Master Gardener Volunteers also help with the maintenance of a number of public gardens such as the Lewis Vaughn Botanical Gardens and the Memorial Arboretum at the International Horse Park.

The Master Gardening Program is committed to educating residents and improving the community through gardening programs, plant clinics and horticulture projects. It is sponsored by The Rockdale County University of Georgia (UGA) Extension.    With over 55 volunteers, the impact of the programs is felt deep within the community.
