The Importance of a Seed Bank

In Aleppo, Syria, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) which had been developing grain crops for use in dryland farming. The ongoing fighting in Aleppo and the surrounding areas became a risk for the research center and its projects. Seeds were shipped to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, in Norway, to ensure their survival.

Why you should be considering planting ryegrass as an annual cool season forage or hay

  1. Grazing tolerant.
  2. Tolerates poorly drained areas better than the small grains.
  3. Lots of proven varieties to choose from.
  4. Long growing season.
  5. Can be drilled into a prepared seedbed or broadcast over an established sod.
  6. Can offer over 70% TDN and 18% CP in the late vegetative stage.
  7. Great candidate for baleage if you have access to all of the needed equipment.

FAMACHA Training coming to Monticello Saturday October 24th

The Jasper County Extension Office is proud to announce that we will be hosting a FAMACHA Training instructed by Dr. Niki Whitley, Fort Valley State University Extension Specialist, in Monticello Saturday, October 24. FAMACHA is a diagnostic test to identify small ruminants that may or may not need deworming. We invite all sheep, goat, and camelid producers who want to become certified in FAMACHA© to come join us.

J. Scott Angle, who has served as dean and director of the University of Georgia’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for the past decade, has announced that he will step down from his position to lead a global organization that works to alleviate hunger.
