The 2017 Colquitt County Longleaf Management and Production Field Day will be held on Tuesday 16 May 2017.
This educational opportunity will be held at several locations during the day.  The first location will be held down Lower Meigs Road.  Lat 31 deg 4’ 51.24” N and 83 deg 59’ 31.68” W Lower Meigs Rd,  Meigs GA (6/10th mile west of New Bethal Church – am session)

The afternoon session will be held at International Forest Co., 1256 GA Hwy 133 North, Moultrie GA (pm)

 Lunch will be provided. Please call the Colquitt County Extension Office (229-616-7455) to register and for a lunch count. This field day is limited to the first 45 that register. CFE, CLE, and GA pesticide credits are applied for.

 

This Longleaf Management and Production is designed for landowners with established longleaf stands and will highlight the development & management issues in longleaf stands, including:

 

The am session will cover Longleaf pine planting spacing considerations for growing quality trees

  • Thinning longleaf stands; types of thinning, timing, frequency and intensity
  •  Minimum number of good quality longleaf stems per acre to thin back to (am session)

 

The pm session will discuss Longleaf seedlings factors: containerized vs bareroot, cost per 1000 and per acre,

  • Longleaf seed source and genetic improvement availability
  • Ordering longleaf seedlings – tour of International Forest Co (IF Co) nursery and seed orchard

9:15 – Jeremy Kichler, Colquitt Co Extension Agent will welcome the group

9:30 – Cross Lower Meigs Rd into old-field planted longleaf stand

9:35 – 11:35 old-field planted longleaf stand – December 1999 machine planted containerized seedlings, 7×11 ft spacing (565 TPA), 57% survival (=322 TPA), with an average of 25% quality stems (80 TPA) to thin back to.

12:10 – 1:00 pm lunch

1:00 – 3:00 pm International Forest Co. longleaf nursery and seed orchard

The am session – longleaf stem quality on old-field planted sites at 500-600 TPA, survival, thinning options, timing and intensity, are there enough quality longleaf trees to thin back to?

the pm session – containerized vs bareroot, cost per 1000 and per acre, longleaf seed source and genetic improvement availability, ordering longleaf seedlings, seedling transport, handling, and care after nursery pick-up and before planting
