This time of year small grain weed control questions are common.  Growers need to be out in their fields looking for several things.  Things to consider include growth stage of the crop at the time of application.  This has an impact on herbicide choice.  Questions like the following can also influence herbicide selection.   Do you have ryegrass?  Do the ryegrass populations in your fields have some level of resistance to a particular mode of action or several modes of action?  Do you have radish or henbit or both?  Below is a great resource that can help with herbicide decisions in wheat.

Some thoughts on weed control with time of year!!

1. Do not mix any ryegrass herbicide(s) with 2,4-D, MCPA or NITROGEN!!!
2. Rotation of ryegrass herbicide chemistry and crops is critical for long-term sustainability of small grain production.
3. 2,4-D is more effective than MCPA on larger weeds but MCPA poses less crop injury potential; so be timely and use MCPA.
4.  Add appropriate adjuvant according to the mixture applied, see pest control handbook or label.
