Here’s a new toy you can play with to see how agricultural losses as measured by crop insurance claims vary from year to year and state to state. It’s an interactive map viewer by the USDA Southwest Climate Hub, and allows you to dig down to the county level to see variations by crop as well. I have not had a chance to look at it in depth but will be trying it out more next week.  You can find it at https://swclimatehub.info/rma/, which includes a tutorial as well as a link to the viewer. The map below shows insurance payments for monetary losses due to drought in 2016.
