For those of you watching all of the activity in the tropics, here is a short update for you.  Thankfully, it is short because for most of us in the Southeast there is not a lot to worry about, although of course we are devastated at the destruction that is currently occurring in the US Territory of Puerto Rico and that has occurred in the US Virgin Islands and other islands in the Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Jose is now well off to the north near New England and should not affect us in the Southeast other than some high waves, rip currents and coastal erosion in Virginia and North Carolina. It will continue to wander around there for a few days but is not expected to move back south. Hurricane Maria, now exiting Puerto Rico, is expected to make a turn to the north in the eastern Bahama Islands and will stay well offshore, causing limited coastal impacts to Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.  Not a single model has it moving towards the main Southeast region. Folks along the coast of North Carolina should watch a little more carefully because depending on how Maria interacts with Jose, the storm could move close enough to cause some impacts beyond just along the shore. (UPDATE: the latest forecast cone is a little farther to the west, which could bring the eastern parts of NC in play. Get updated info from https://www.hurricanes.gov to stay on top of current forecasts.)

The only other tropical system in the Atlantic is the remains of TS Lee, which are well to the east in the Atlantic and won’t get anywhere close to us even if they reform into a tropical storm again. That leaves us with sunny skies and warm temperatures for at least the next few days, although rainfall chances ramp up by this weekend.  Enjoy the harvest weather and keep watching the tropics since the season lasts through the end of November.
