In NOAA’s monthly weather briefing on Thursday, they provided a special section discussing the forecast for high tides and coastal flooding for the US in 2017 following record high flood events in 2016.  Here are a couple of slides I captured from the briefing. They show that two areas in the Southeast set all-time records for tidal flooding last year (Charleston and Savannah) and that more high tides are expected in 2017. This is related to both changes in atmospheric circulation (the winds blow on the surface of the water and help move it around) and increases in sea level, which I will discuss in a post later today.
