Have you ever heard that tornadoes don’t hit cities, or rivers, or hills?  While local geographic features can have a small impact on tornadoes, this week’s anniversary of the Miami tornado of May 12, 1997 is a good example of how wrong that “old wives’ tale” is.  Of course, here in the Southeast we have many counter-examples of tornadoes hitting cities, with Birmingham and Tuscaloosa in Alabama and Atlanta GA as prime examples. So don’t think that somehow you are safe from a tornado because of some peculiarity in your location–any place can get hit.  Here is a good write-up of the Miami storm from the Miami Herald from last year: https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/miami-dade/article77157627.html.
