The WunderBlog noted last week that we are off to a very active severe weather season this year, the most active start since 2008.  We have seen some of the impacts of the season in the Southeast, with two large severe weather outbreaks in January this year.  The central part of the US is likely to become especially active in the next few weeks with the normal spring storm patterns so more outbreaks there are very likely.

Part of the reason for the early severe weather activity in the US may be linked towards extremely warm water in the western Gulf of Mexico, which adds energy to the already volatile spring weather patterns.  You can read more about the water temperatures and their likely impacts on severe weather in the Washington Post here.
