Back in 2016 the weather station at Mount Mitchell in North Carolina reported that they had received 41 inches of snow in a single 24-hour period.  If that had been correct, it would have been a new record for the state.  But a committee of state weather experts examined the observation and determined that it was inaccurate, meaning the old record of 36 inches in 24 hours (also at Mount Mitchell, during the Storm of the Century in March 1993), still stands.  You can read the story of how the scientists determined the new observation was not real at https://www.blueridgenow.com/news/20170115/weather-committee-nixes-2016-mount-mitchell-record-snowfall.
