The latest Drought Monitor came out this morning and shows that the area experiencing moderate drought in the Southeast has almost tripled since last week.  D1 now covers all of the northern counties of Georgia with a small excursion into Alabama, and all of western North Carolina is also designated D1 this week.  Drought conditions have also expanded in western South Carolina and abnormally dry conditions (D0) have also expanded in several areas.  The forecast for rain in the next week shows most of the region, with the exception of Virginia, receiving below-normal rainfall, so this is not likely to disappear in next week’s Drought Monitor.
