NOAA published an article today describing some recent research on the number of large fires are likely to occur by mid-century with projected warming. Most of Florida, southern Georgia and Alabama, and the coastal Carolinas are all expected to see significant increases in the number of weeks with very large fires. Smaller increases are expected in the southern Appalachians. These large fires include the top ten percent of all fires, which account for the majority of acres burned each year.
The large fires could cause significant impacts to commercial forestry and put a strain on forest-fighting capabilities in Southeastern states, especially during drought years when fires are most common.
