The latest seasonal forecasts were released by the Climate Prediction Center this week and show little indication of what our next three months could be like. With the chances for an El Nino rapidly waning, there is nothing in the atmospheric pattern to suggest whether our temperature and precipitation will be near, above or below normal. That means for planning purposes, you should use past weather, or climatology, to determine planting dates, etc. Since we are still in marginally neutral conditions, there is an increased chance of a late frost which could nip early vegetation growth, particularly if we go through a warm period which allows plants to break dormancy, but no way to determine if or when that might occur, since individual extreme weather events are hard to predict more than a week in advance.
