The Pentagon released a new report this week which discusses how the military will prepare for adapting to changes in climate which could impact operations around the globe.  In particular, rising sea levels threaten military facilities along coastlines, sea lanes will change as the Arctic Ocean becomes more open due to melting sea ice, and security may be threatened by populations displaced by drought and food-related war.  Changes in local environments could also increase diseases carried by mosquitoes.

“Politics or ideology must not get in the way of sound planning. Our armed forces must prepare for a future with a wide spectrum of possible threats, weighing risks and probabilities to ensure that we will continue to keep our country secure,” Defense Secretary Hagel wrote.
