The Southeast Regional Climate Center posted a story on Facebook today about NOAA and the Coast Guard joining together to preserve a WW1 shipwreck off the coast of North Carolina.  The lightship Diamond Shoal Lightship No. 71 was attacked by a German ship after it reported by radio the presence of a German U-boat off the coast.  The crew was allowed to leave before the ship was destroyed by surface fire.  You can read the full story here.

If you are looking for weather data along the coast, you may be able to use information from the National Data Buoy Center.  Their web site is https://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/.  They have historical and real-time data for coastal areas across the country, including the Great Lakes, and also have a lot of data from international waters.
